This exciting 10 month apprenticeship scheme combines ‘on the job’ training, working for an MP in their office, with a formal qualification in Business & Administration.  The scheme aims to widen access to parliament, for young people from all backgrounds.

The Parliamentary Academy is delivered by New Deal of the Mind and North Hertfordshire College in partnership with a number of MPs from all political parties.

Parliamentary Trainees will work in an office assistant role. On Thursdays you will take part in workshops and carryout your study towards an NVQ Level 2/3 Business & Administration qualification. This training will take place in Parliament and will be conducted by North Hertfordshire College and New Deal of the Mind.

Main purpose

To play an important support role within a parliamentary office. Completing a course of study and obtaining work related professional qualifications.

We are looking for a Parliamentary Trainee with a keen interest in politics. The successful candidate will display a can-do attitude.

Key Tasks

General Administration including but not limited to:

• Answering telephone calls and dealing with routine enquiries
• Diary management
• Opening and distributing mail
• Creating and maintaining information on systems and databases
• General administrative duties including typing, filing, faxing and photocopying
• Additional projects as required
• Research on government policy
• Maintaining press/ media databases

Required abilities and experience:

• Understand the office’s objectives and targets
• Understand the values of the political party you will be working for
• Ability to work to tight deadlines and multi-task
• Excellent attention to detail, spelling and grammar with a high level of accuracy
• A positive attitude and a willingness to take on a variety of tasks
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
• Must have strong initiative and excellent organisational skills
• Good knowledge of Microsoft Office, email and internet

About the training:
In addition to the fantastic ‘on the job’ training you will study the following compulsory training units:
• Functional Skills ICT (Where applicable)
• NVQ2 Certificate in Business & Administration
• Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Business & Administration
• Personal learning and thinking skills
• Employers Rights and Responsibilities
• Manage own performance in a business environment
• Evaluate and improve own performance in a business environment
• Work in a business environment
• Solve business problems


Eligibility Criteria:
• Candidates must be aged 16-24
• Previous experience in an administrator role is desirable but not necessary
• GCSE Maths and English at grade A-C
