This position is voluntary, so there are no specific requirements. Patterns of volunteering can be negotiated at the interview stage. However, as a guideline, those who are able to contribute at least 3 days a week for a period of three months or more are likely to get the most out of the internship.

The successful candidate will be offered the opportunity to assist with a wide range of tasks including:

  • Drafting of letters and dealing with correspondence with constituents, lobby groups and Government bodies
  • General office administration including dealing with telephone enquiries and visitors
  • Opening and sorting daily post and emails
  • Drafting news releases and newsletters
  • Maintaining and updating the website
  • Assisting in the organisation and running of events.

Your covering letter should address why you would like to work in this office, and indicate the length of time for which you will be available. Liberal Democrat sympathies and an awareness of Party policy are an advantage, although you do not need to be a party member.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
