Job Details

Lynne Featherstone, Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Hornsey and Wood Green, is looking to recruit a driven, enthusiastic and committed intern to help out with both her Parliamentary and constituency work.

Internships are usually (but not necessarily) short, intensive, volunteer placements that offer you the opportunity to gain experience of the practical and professional side of an MP’s work, giving you the chance to get involved in supporting the work Lynne Featherstone does for her constituents.

An MP’s role is to represent constituents both in Parliament and in the constituency. This internship is a unique educational opportunity to learn about both aspects of her work.

Based in the constituency office (N8), the intern will have the opportunity to gain an insight into Lynne’s Parliamentary duties, by helping out with policy response and help her correspond with constituents on a range of policy issues.

The internship will also offer the successful candidate the opportunity to support Lynne in her extensive local work. Interns will be able to assist Lynne’s caseworkers in the advocacy-based casework we perform on a daily basis for local people, as well as regular administrative work. Interns will be offered the opportunity to interact directly with members of the public and correspond with local authorities and government departments.

In order to be able to get the best from the internship, we look for the following skills from the successful candidate:

  • Strong organisational skills
  • Not afraid to take initiative and work independently
  • Excellent communication skills – a good GCSE English pass is required
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Sympathy with Liberal Democrat policies. You don’t have to be a member, but you will be expected to understand Lib Dem policies and sympathise with their aims.

This is a voluntary opportunity to allow you an insight into the work of an MP. There are no set hours or length of commitment, but in order to get the most out of the experience, we hope you would be able to commit for a three month period.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Closing Date: 23 January 2012

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews are likely to take place in week commencing 23rd January 2012.
