Job Details

Sir Alan Beith MP is looking for a full-time Caseworker to work in his Constituency Office in Alnwick, Northumberland. The post holder will provide advice and support to constituents on a variety of issues through liaison with Government, local authorities and other agencies to resolve these matters. Professionalism and excellent organisational and communication skills are essential requirements.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience of administrative work and knowledge of office systems.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a range of people.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Competent use of MS Office and an interest in using technology to improve efficiency and communication.
  • The successful candidate will probably have experience in dealing with problems or complaints from members of the public on a face-to-face basis, and liaising with public bodies.

In addition, the successful candidate must be sympathetic to the aims and values of the Liberal Democrats.

Duties will include:

  • Dealing with daily queries from members of the public on the phone or in person, taking the appropriate initial action to resolve, document or escalate their concerns or enquiries.
  • Providing administrative support in completing casework and replying to constituents whilst ensuring that high standards of confidentiality and professionalism are maintained.
  • Drafting letters and any other documents as required by the Member to help in his role as MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed.
  • Helping to maintain an effective filing system, including extracting and compiling documents on request and liaising with the Member’s Westminster office in order to respond to constituents’ queries.
  • Organising and publicising constituency surgeries.
  • Undertaking general administrative/secretarial tasks to contribute to the running of the Constituency Office and assisting with the work of other colleagues as required.
  • The ability to undertake occasional weekend or evening work would be an advantage.

£16,000-18,000 depending on experience, 25 days' annual leave, public holidays, pension.

Interviews will take place in Alnwick on Monday 28 May 2012.

Ideally the successful candidate will be able to start work on or before 1 July 2012.
