PEN International promotes literature and defends freedom of expression. It is the worldwide association of writers with 145 PEN Centres spanning over 100 countries.

We are looking for a Policy Officer to coordinate our international public policy activity and advocacy programmes with intergovernmental organisations. Based in the PEN International office in London, this is an exciting opportunity to work with freedom of expression and literature globally.

The Policy Officer will coordinate PEN’s international public policy programme, working with the Deputy Director to build on PEN’s International Policy & Advocacy Strategy.

The Policy Officer will coordinate PEN’s advocacy programmes with intergovernmental organisations and our research and publishing schedule. Developing innovative methods to spread PEN‘s policy messages to international organisations, members, governments and other target audiences will be a key part of this role.

The role will involve fundraising, ensuring PEN’s policy programmes are embedded in our social media and communications activity, and working with the Deputy Director to establish policy initiatives and programmes.

You will need to demonstrate experience of working in a public policy, civil society or human rights environment, ideally in an international context, and appreciation, knowledge and understanding of public policy, freedom of expression and civil society issues and practices. Appreciation of working in an international membership organisation and awareness of PEN International’s membership are desirable. The successful candidate will demonstrate language skills (French and/or Spanish), policy and advocacy experience, and communications skills.

This is a part-time contract for 3 days per week, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
