£18,000 - £22,000 (depending on experience)

Job Details:

Murdo Fraser is seeking a full-time Parliamentary Aide and Press Officer to be based in the Scottish Parliament, with occasional days based in the regional office in Scone, Perthshire.

Essential requirements:

  • Degree educated;
  • Have an excellent standard of written English;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Able to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and have a flexible approach to working hours;
  • Awareness of dealing with the media;
  • Able to provide high quality advice, analysis and briefings on a range of legislative and policy areas;
  • A knowledge and understanding of the Scottish political scene; and
  • Hold a full Driver’s Licence and preferably have access to a car.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and draft speeches, press releases and briefings as necessary for parliamentary and constituency engagements;
  • Help formulate and lodge motions and parliamentary questions, both written and oral;
  • Review and analyse the content of Scottish Government documents and other reports provided by organisations;
  • Respond effectively and courteously to routine correspondence and enquiries from constituents;
  • Attend meetings relating to parliamentary and constituency work with or on behalf of MSP;
  • Assist MSP to create campaigns and establish them in the Scottish Parliament and in the media;
  • Communicate effectively with both internal and external contacts;
  • Competent use of IT including Microsoft Office package, email and internet to: draft correspondence and reports; set up and maintain spreadsheets and undertake research;
  • Manage the Scottish Parliament diary, organising meetings and events;
  • Design, write and produce newsletters, surveys and questionnaires;
  • Regularly update MSP website.

Interview Date: 23 July 2012 in the Scottish Parliament.

Start Date: a mutually convenient date in August.
