The Institute of Physics is looking to appoint an intern to work in its Education Department for a period of two to three months in the winter of 2012/13.

Eligibility

Candidates will either have recently completed an undergraduate degree in physics, at a UK or ROI university and should also have a keen interest in the Institute’s policy and advocacy activities.

• Nature of the work:

The Institute of Physics is a leading scientific society promoting physics and bringing physicists together for the benefit of all. It has a worldwide membership of around 40,000 comprising physicists from all sectors, as well as those with an interest in physics. It works to advance physics research, application and education; and engages with policy makers and the public to develop awareness and understanding of physics. Its publishing company, IOP Publishing, is a world leader in professional scientific communications.

The Education Department supports schools and teachers of physics. As part of this work, we are developing a curriculum map – using relational databases and topic mapping software. This would be one part of the role. There would also be some small research projects relating to education.

• Funding arrangements

The Institute will provide an allowance (£1,252 per month – tax and NI will be deducted where applicable) for the duration of the internship (35 hours per week).

• Working arrangements

Successful applicants will be expected to spend as much time as possible working (up to 35 hours per week) in the Institute’s offices in London, thus, it would be preferable for them to reside within reasonable commuting distance for the duration of the placement. Computing, e-mail and other facilities necessary for the placement period will be supplied by the Institute’s offices.
