Job Details

Democracy Matters is an informal alliance of over 30 civil society umbrella groups and learning providers which aim to promote practical political education (see http://www.democracymatters.org.uk/about-us/alliance-members/.

We run on a voluntary basis and are looking for ambitious volunteers to help us:

  • Organise regular events in the House of Commons with an MP or elsewhere,
  • Develop our social media campaign (blog, Facebook, Twitter etc)
  • Run our “Democracy Diary” of key events www.democracymatters.org.uk/democracy-diary/
  • Build our membership
  • Raise funds for volunteer and project expenses
  • Organise campaign training workshops
  • Coordinate preparations for the Magna Carta anniversary in 2015
  • Lobby MPs for practical political education
  • Promote practical political education in adult, further and higher education

Volunteers can work from home or the office of one of our members. Length of time and commitment is flexible, but we would like a commitment of 4 – 8 hours a week over several months or a year, or several days a week for a shorter period.

We are fundraising for volunteer expenses and if possible paid staff.

We are creating a new website, but look at our old site for recent information: www.democracymatters.info/

This would suit someone looking for experience in politics, journalism, information, education, marketing, community action or organising events, with a commitment to deepening democracy and public participation on a non-partisan basis.

Come to our volunteer briefing to find out more about what we do and how we work.

The role being advertised is a voluntary one. As such, there are no set hours and responsibilities and you should be free to come and go as you wish. If the post demands set hours and/or has a specific job description you may be deemed to be a ‘worker’ and be covered by National Minimum Wage/National Living Wage legislation.
