Ethnic Minority Liberal Democrats (‘EMLD’) is looking for an intern to join us for up to three months based at Lib Dem HQ at Great George Street, London from July-September 2013.

The internship would suit a graduate seeking to learn more about the inner workings of a major political party. He or she should also be interested in supporting the mission of the organisation to campaign on issues relating to race equality and democratic representation in the UK.

In addition to the main role of assisting EMLD, the intern may be required to assist the party's Diversity Unit and/or Membership Unit.

Travel expenses and lunch would be covered for normal days of working or when in attendance at Conference or at an event.

The successful applicant will be exposed to a wide variety of administrative tasks (correspondence, handling mail and managing telephone calls). There will be an opportunity to work on specific projects and plan events, and the intern may be invited to attend meetings and briefings in order to remain informed about current issues. Duties will vary depending on tasks, but could include:

1) working with the EMLD executive team in helping with recruitment, outreach, and fundraising including:

welcoming new members and encouraging membership renewal of existing members
preparing news items and content for the EMLD website and e-bulletins
creating and designing literature in different languages for parliamentary and council by-elections
creating an introductory pack and contacting different Community organisations and business associations in the UK
creating and updating a contacts database

2) undertaking research and assisting with the provision of updates on relevant policies and developments relevant to the diverse communities using a range of resources

3) supporting research development, implementation and analysis eg, creating online surveys

4) engaging in campaigns

5) general support in the organisation of events and meetings and/or participation at Conference

Person Specification:

knowledge of or have an interest in politics aligned with the views and values of the Liberal Democrat party
good written and oral communication skills
computer literate with particular interest in website design and hard copy (leaflets, publications) design advantageous
good organisational skills and ability to multi-task
flexible and resourceful
