Job Details

Fixed-term contracts.

The roles

The LGA is looking for two people to make a positive difference to our policy development and lobbying work. Within both posts, you will deliver priority work programmes to support, promote, and improve local government.

The resilience, safety and regulation team is leading a wide range of work across community safety policy and improvement, fire and rescue authorities and local regulation including calling for a radical shift in licensing. This active work area has a vacancy for a forward-thinking, persuasive individual who will undertake work on a project basis across the whole portfolio, broadening their expertise and knowledge of local government. This adviser post can initially be offered on a fixed term basis until 31/3/15.

The children and young people team is developing ‘our ambition for children’ – a set of proposals that would see public service provision joined up around the needs of children. The team has a vacancy for someone looking to develop their career by influencing the development of children’s social care policy and supporting local authorities to work with partners to deliver joined up services in this challenging area. The post in this team will be offered on a fixed term or secondment basis until 31/3/16.

The requirements

It’s a chance to raise your profile as you help the LGA develop a clear evidence base to inform our policy and advocacy positions; build knowledge of what works and what doesn’t; and communicate persuasively with councils and with government. You’ll be managing multiple projects so you’ll need to be able to move swiftly between these to add value.

The people we offer these posts to will be excellent communicators, problem-solvers and team players.

It’s essential that you have a sound understanding of local government and the key issues facing councils. Whilst the adviser roles at the LGA are generic roles, we would expect candidates to have previous experience and added value to offer to the team that they join.

It’s important that you’re politically aware with the ability to exercise discretion, judgement and confidentiality when dealing with politicians and officers at every level. Your ability to grasp issues quickly will make you stand out.

We value diversity and encourage applications from all sections of the community.
