2 internships at Campaign for Better Transport, the UK's leading sustainable transport charity.

Research Intern

4 days/week, 1 month, starting September. Exact hours flexible.

Helping to write and produce our Car Dependency Scorecard, comparing the extent to which people in different cities are forced to rely on car use through lack of access to more sustainable transport options.

  • Review and assess a range of online sources, data provided by other charities and campaigning groups, as well as published local authority and Government documents
  • Call or write to local authority and Department for Transport officers to ask for information and, when necessary, use Freedom of Information requests to find out more
  • Input new findings and information into our resource base
  • Help with analysis of our findings and writing up information for use in the Car Dependency Scorecard publication
  • Help with presenting data appropriately for external audiences including media and the public

Cuts Watch Intern

2 days/week, 8-10 weeks, starting September. Exact hours flexible.

Working on our annual ‘Cuts Watch’ project, investigating and assisting in the research and mapping of Local Authority cuts to bus services across the UK. This is an important project which will assist us in campaigning for adequate bus funding before the General Election.

  • Call or write to local authority transport officers to ask for information and, when necessary, use Freedom of Information requests to find out more
  • Collate and Input new findings and information into our resource base
  • Help input and update results into a database and interactive mapping tool
  • Map cuts to bus services against Westminster Constituencies to target MPs accordingly
  • Help identifying and contacting local campaigners in the areas worst affected by the cuts

Previous experience of successfully delivering qualitative and/or quantitative research is essential (this could be in a university setting). Experience and understanding of campaigning and transport policy, and the ways that local authorities make decisions would desirable, although this is a chance to learn more about these areas as part of the work.

Excellent online research and IT skills are essential, particularly the use of spreadsheets (via Google Drive and/or Excel, and experience of editing websites is a strong advantage.
