The Patients Association has been providing patients and the public with advice relating to their experience of health and social care for over fifty years. It works by empowering and supporting patients, working with care organisations to improve service delivery and by collecting important information that can influence policy.

Purpose of the Internship:

• To support the development and implementation of the Patients Association’s strategy for policy and research.
• To support the Patient’s Association’s aim to influence national policy to improve outcomes for service users in health and social care.
• To provide experience that would develop skills and support a career in public policy with a particular emphasis on health and social care.

Main responsibilities of the role will include:

• Assisting with project research and the compilation of policy briefs and reports.
• Preparing background information for responding to consultation documents.
• Producing and disseminating weekly news.
• Maximising the use of social media and the website to promote the Patients’ Association.
• Dealing with incoming media enquiries and drafting press statements and press releases.
• Responding to queries from the CEO’s office and trustees.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualities:
• An understanding of health and social care issues.
• Good communication skills and ability to communicate to a variety of audiences over the phone, by email and in writing.
• Time management skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Proficient using MS Office programmes.

Desirable Qualities:
• Ability to communicate with a national audience e.g. social media.
• A degree and/or a specialist qualification that is relevant to the job.
• Paid or voluntary work experience in health and social care and/or the voluntary sector.

The Patients Association is looking for candidates who can start as soon as possible and will be interviewing candidates on a rolling basis.

We may appoint before the closing date if a suitable candidate is found.
