Thangam Debbonaire MP is seeking two highly motivated, well organised individuals as part-time (each working 2-3 days per week) caseworkers in her Bristol West constituency office. The Caseworkers will report to the Chief of Staff and work alongside a Constituency Assistant and an Admin Assistant, both of whom will also carry out some casework tasks. An ability to travel to London occasionally is necessary.

The job description includes:
• Assessing casework coming in via post, email, or telephone.
• Liaising with government agencies, the voluntary sector and others to resolve problems and generate action letters to appropriate bodies (eg Home Office, JobCentre Plus).
• Providing information, advice and support for individual constituents on a range of issues.
• Keeping constituents informed promptly of progress and outcomes and assessing replies and taking further follow up action as appropriate.
• Attending and assisting at MP’s advice surgeries in the constituency (some evening and weekend working may be required).
• Ensuring that cases are dealt with in a sensitive and confidential manner, adhering to the Data Protection Act principles and respecting the confidentiality of data.
• Competent use of IT including casework management systems, Microsoft Office packages, email and internet.
• Assisting with the work of other colleagues as required.

Person specification:

• Excellent interpersonal and customer service and/or advice-giving skills.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and a clear and concise writing style.
• An ability to organise and manage their own workload and work to strict deadlines.
• A methodical approach to record keeping and ability to use online casework software.
• A willingness to work cooperatively as a key member of a small team.
• Knowledge of key social policy issues particularly housing, immigration or benefits is desirable.
• Willingness and ability to work to the highest standards of public service.

As Thangam is a newly elected MP, successful candidates will initially be offered a six-month fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension following a review of the office structure.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
