The Parliamentary Adviser will be responsible for closely following the works of the Environment and Agriculture Committees. In particular, the successful candidate will participate actively in the work on the proposal for a regulation on inclusion of land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) in the EU 2030 climate and energy framework, a dossier overseen by Paul as the S&D Environment shadow rapporteur.

The successful candidate will quickly familiarise themselves with all the aspects of the dossier, establish contacts with the stakeholders and all relevant parliamentary contacts. S/he will draft legislative amendments and lead the negotiations with the political groups, the Council, and the Commission.

The successful candidate will also liaise closely with Labour’s Shadow Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Team and will work on Labour’s policy proposals for the future of UK food and farming following the UK’s departure from the EU.

As part of their duties, the candidate will also provide input to communications (social media, blogs, press releases, etc) relevant to the work in the environment and agriculture committees.

Other duties will include preparation of committee and plenary votes, responding to selected casework submitted by constituents, and attending to any other relevant parliamentary work.

Requirements
The successful candidate is expected to hold a master’s degree and have a minimum of 3 years of experience in European affairs, including experience in influencing a legislative process (drafting of amendments, participation in shadow meetings and three way negotiations).

The candidate should demonstrate strong familiarity with the EU’s climate, environment, food and farming policies. Knowledge of UK food, farming and environment context will be beneficial. She or he will be a rapid learner and team player, capable of establishing contacts quickly and operating in a fast-paced environment in order to meet tight deadlines. Strong leadership skills will be an advantage, as will excellent communication and negotiation skills.

Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other European languages will be an advantage.

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews to be held in Brussels in early December 2016, provisionally scheduled for Monday 5th or Tuesday 6th. The appointment will start in early January 2017 and continue until the UK’s MEPs cease to exit, which could be until June 2019, unless the UK leaves the EU before then.
