This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and highly capable individual to support Roger Mullin with his work as the Member of Parliament for the Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath constituency from his parliamentary office in Westminster.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analysing, evaluating and interpreting data to ensure the Member is accurately informed of key issues.
  • Developing and maintaining current knowledge of Bills, Early Day Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates, etc.
  • Drafting Early Day Motions (EDMs) and parliamentary questions.
  • Undertaking research and producing briefings for parliamentary debates and policy issues.
  • Managing and monitoring all incoming communications to the Westminster office.
  • Assisting with diary management and ensuring the Member is fully briefed on upcoming parliamentary engagements.
  • Attending parliamentary meetings and events with/on behalf of the Member.
  • Maintaining close communication with the constituency office.
  • Managing a varying and demanding workload independently.
  • Undertaking other administrative and secretarial duties in support of the Member’s work as required.

Essential Competences and Experience

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the proven ability to produce a high standard of written work.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work within tight deadlines and prioritise effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the confidence to approach and interact with high-profile politicians and professionals in a parliamentary setting.
  • Good IT skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Awareness and understanding of current political issues in Scotland and the rest of the UK.
  • A flexible approach with the willingness to work in line with the parliamentary timetable.
  • The ability to work independently and on your own initiative, as this role will involve regular lone working from the parliamentary office.

Desirable Competences and Experience

  • Knowledge of parliamentary procedures and terminology.
  • Previous experience of working in a parliamentary or political environment.

Hours: 15-22.5 hours (2-3 days) per week.
Contract Type: temporary for 12 months.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews are expected to take place on Monday 13th February 2017 in London with the expected start date mid to end of March.
