Job Details

About the role
The Social Market Foundation is looking to appoint an ambitious, articulate and rigorous Chief Economist. The successful candidate will lead the SMF’s economic work by carrying out analysis and research and by representing the SMF as a spokesperson on television and radio, and at conferences and events. We envisage that this will be a high profile role with exposure to senior opinion formers and decision-makers, as well as the media.

The SMF’s interests span the economic impact of leaving the EU, the labour market, productivity, fiscal policy, regulation and macro-economic policies. The candidate should be confident and credible commenting on the breadth of these topics as well as able to develop more specialist expertise and reputation over time.

The work will be hugely varied, including leading analysis independently and with other members of the research team, pitching for new work, writing proposals and editorials, reacting rapidly to fiscal and economic events and data, presenting to the media and representing the SMF at events.

Person specification
We are looking for someone who has a compelling track record as an economist whether in academia, journalism, industry, a think tank or government. They should be able to develop striking and policy-relevant hypotheses, test them rigorously and explain their findings in a clear and compelling way. They should be confident writing articles and reports, as well as presenting arguments verbally.
