Job Details

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK. It has a prominent and influential position at the very heart of current debate over the future of healthcare provision. The BMA speaks for doctors at all stages of their careers and is a leading voice on a wide range of professional and political issues affecting medicine and health.

We are looking for candidates to fill two Policy Advisor and Support Officer (PASO) roles in the terms and conditions function, one permanent (employed doctors) and one for 12 months (independent contractors). The employed doctors team is responsible for negotiating the terms and conditions for doctors employed in the NHS, including junior doctors, consultants, staff and associate specialist doctors and medical academics. The independent contractors team is responsible for the terms and conditions of GP principals (partners), locums and private practice doctors.

Your role will include undertaking research and drafting written reports and advice on policy issues related to doctors' terms and conditions, from pay and working hours to academic research and part-time work. You will support the head of team and senior policy advisers, help deliver plans to engage with members and stakeholders, and contribute to the development of guidance and support materials. You will work with colleagues in communications, equality and diversity, public affairs and legal to help us shape the national debate about doctors' working conditions in the wider context of Brexit and the discussion about seven day access to health services.

To succeed in this role you will need to be able to grasp new policy concepts quickly and undertake research and analysis of policy issues. You should also have excellent writing skills, be able to draft policy reports and briefings, and establish effective relationships with counterparts in the directorate and in relevant stakeholder organisations.

If you would like to help the BMA play its part in shaping the future of healthcare, please express your interest and apply for one of these positions.
