As the Council’s Equalities Manager you will be at the heart of this, working closely to advise the City’s Elected Mayor, Councillors and Senior Managers as the lead expert on all equalities matters. You will lead our approach in shaping the council’s continually changing equalities agenda, you will creatively challenge and develop new ideas which will lead to real and positive impacts on people’s lives.

Creatively to Challenge
Based at our main headquarters in the city centre, the Corporate Equalities Manager will report to the Director of Delivery, Communications and Political Governance. You will lead the Council’s approach supported by a team of Equalities Officers and will work closely with critical functions such as Communications and Human Resources to provide creative and inspiring leadership on equalities and to make sure we have the right approaches in place to make a real difference.

The role will involve effective communications and engagement across the organisation, including with the various internal employee groups who champion specific protected characteristics. You will also be expected to develop and sustain strong and positive working relationships with partners.

You will also advise the Council on new and prospective equalities legislation and external best practice and highlight both the policy and practice implications of these.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • An excellent knowledge and understanding of equality and diversity issues, legislation and best practice.
  • Substantial experience of leading and driving policy development.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to gather, analyse and present information in a clear and understandable way.
  • Proven ability to network effectively with excellent influencing and negotiating skills at a senior level.
  • Ability to constructively challenge and provide innovative solutions.
  • Ability to inspire confidence through professional credibility and quality of advice.
