Job Title: 2017 Summer School Placement

Working For: Debbie Abrahams MP (Oldham East and Saddleworth)

Location: Oldham

Salary: None

Length of Contract:

Job Details

Debbie Abrahams MP is running her fourth annual 'working for your community' Summer School which has been the training ground for young people in the Oldham and wider Greater Manchester areas to get direct experience of politics, public service and campaigning.

Participants, each aged between 18 and 24, will develop key skills for future involvement in politics and community based work. There will also be opportunities to meet high profile figures from within the Labour Party.

The programme runs for two weeks over mid-late July.

The first week consists of training and talks about community campaigning and also includes a day visit to Parliament. Participants then go on a week long placement in a local community organisation learning team working skills and doing project outreach work in the community. On 28th July participants will graduate.

Organisations which have been involved in previous years include local charities Oldham Foodbank, Voluntary Action Oldham, the Alzheimer's Society and Positive Steps.

All candidates must be aged 18-24 and available for every weekday (Monday to Friday) for the duration of the scheme. Previous experience in campaigning or community outreach may help your application, but is not essential.

There is no cost to participants, although you’ll need to arrange your own travel if not resident in Oldham.

You do not have to be a member of the Labour party to participate.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
