Laura Pidcock MP is seeking an exceptional individual to help set up and manage her new constituency office.

The ideal candidate will have prior office management experience, and prior experience working for an MP would be helpful. Strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written) are essential. A genuine commitment to the constituency and willingness to invest time working in the constituency office as well as in-depth knowledge of the national political environment are important.

Applicants will need to work as part of a close knit team, and willing to occasionally work extra hours, attend surgeries or travel to meetings in the constituency, London and other parts of the UK.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the team sets and refreshes its strategic goals and remains focussed on meeting them, paying particular attention to managing workloads and providing an excellent service to constituents
  • Striving to deliver the best possible working environment for staff
  • Co-ordination of projects
  • Oversight of casework and expenses systems
  • Advising on policy issues, including analysing, evaluating and interpreting data
  • Liaison with groups and stakeholders at Westminster, within the constituency and general public on the MP’s behalf
  • Monitor media coverage and brief the MP accordingly
  • Overall management of the MP’s diary

Necessary skills

  • A good knowledge of the issues important to North West Durham
  • A good understanding of the government policies relating to Laura Pidcock MP’s policy portfolio
  • A good overall understanding of current political issues
  • Experience of the political environment and sympathy with the Labour Party’s aims and principles
  • Excellent oral, written and presentation skills
  • Excellent research, analytical, evaluation and interpretation skills
  • Numerical ability and experience with budget management
  • Ability to produce reports thoroughly and succinctly
  • Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, expenses systems and internet research

Appointment will be dependent on satisfactory references.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interviews will be held on Friday 7th July 2017. Start dates are to be decided and are negotiable. Interviews will be held in the constituency office.
