Laura Pidcock MP is looking for a full-time Secretary to join her new team in North West Durham. This a perfect opportunity for someone with excellent communication, administrative and IT skills who works well in a small team, has a positive attitude and would like to gain experience in a Member’s office.

The Secretary will contribute to a highly efficient, professional, warm and friendly office atmosphere and will be the first point of contact for the residents of North West Durham, the press, outside organisations and other stakeholders.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with arrangements for events
  • Diary management
  • Handling administrative arrangements for meetings
  • Liaising with external suppliers when required regarding office supplies
  • Opening and dispatching mail
  • Photocopying, filing, record keeping and typing correspondence
  • Providing administrative support in relation to MPs expense claims
  • Responding to enquiries by telephone and email
  • Greeting and making constituents feel comfortable
  • Composing social media updates
  • Dealing with standard queries from members of the public

Necessary skills:

  • Excellent IT skills including MS Office Applications (i.e. Word, Excel and Outlook), Internet, Intranet and social media.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with a positive and flexible approach.
  • Ability to draft letters and emails to a high professional standard.
  • Motivated to work independently and impartially as well as the ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
  • Excellent office administration skills.

Experience:

  • Experience of working in an office environment
  • Experience of customer/client services
  • Experience of working with social media

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews will be held on Friday 21st July and the start date of employment is negotiable. Interviews will be held in the constituency office.
