Job Details

The post is based in Westminster, liaising with staff in the constituency. Organisational and policy/research skills plus use of communications/social media is essential. Experience in welfare/finance policy and knowledge of High Peak is desirable.

You must be effective/professional at all times, with a desire to be part of a team dedicated to ensuring effective action in Westminster for High Peak.

Key Tasks

  • Administrative support, including correspondence/enquiries in Parliament and liaising with the constituency office as required.
  • Manage the London diary, including provision of real time updates from the House, relevant Committees and/or Whips to Ruth.
  • Develop/maintain knowledge of bills, Early Day Motions, legislation, Hansard, debates and other Parliamentary business.
  • Monitor media coverage and brief Ruth on relevant issues.
  • Prepare/present briefing notes for committees, press releases, parliamentary questions, speeches and other output for the Member.
  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data (from Parliament and external stakeholders where required) to ensure Ruth is accurately informed on key issues, including in respect of potential questions and motions to be put to the House.
  • Assist with casework and campaigns as required.
  • Manage and contribute to policy projects which the Member chooses to lead on.
  • Supervise other staff/volunteers/interns) as appropriate.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational skills and a methodical approach to record keeping.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office (caseworker.mp experience is desirable).
  • Interest in current affairs and sympathy with Labour Party values.
  • Demonstrable experience of policy research and briefing.
  • Good knowledge of key policy and political issues.
  • Good people skills.

Other Information

Ruth envisages this role being full time, but may be able to offer flexibility and/or job sharing for the right candidate(s).

The role may include some evening and/or weekend work.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
