Job Details

About us

Newham is a unique and vibrant place to work. The borough is one of the most diverse places in the world, and has the youngest population in the country. The council is working to transform the lives of local people with a focus on building the resilience of residents, our community and the local economy. Through this agenda we are aiming to close the gap in life chances between our residents and those in more affluent parts of the Capital.

About the Job

We are looking for a talented candidate to take on the role of Senior Policy Officer. Based in the Strategy Team, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team of public policy analysts, social researchers, public affairs and performance management staff who inform our corporate planning and our service provision and promote Newham’s vision locally, regionally and nationally.

Reporting to the Policy and Public Affairs Manager, you will support the development and delivery of creative solutions to key policy issues to ensure that Newham is addressing our residents’ multiple needs and is at the forefront of policy innovation. You will be ‘horizon scanning’ for new ideas, responding to how current policy developments affect Newham, liaising with policy influencers, and turning your knowledge into useful briefings to inform strategic directions and service area delivery. You will work closely with the Chief Executive and Mayor and with senior officers and members. You will support the articulation of Newham’s policy to a wider audience including drafting speeches and providing engaging copy for internal and external publications.

Successful candidates will be expected to specialise in specific policy areas such as Public Health, Housing or Children and Young People, while being flexible enough to tackle any issues as they arise. We have up to 2 posts available for the right candidates.

About You

It is essential that you can work in multidisciplinary teams, are aware of the national and local policy landscape and have a user’s eye for how to communicate complex national policy and research into a meaningful brief.

If you are interested in joining our dynamic and committed team to work towards real change for Newham’s residents, then we would love to hear from you.

Closing Date: 7 January 2018

Interview/Start Dates

Interviews to be held in early January.
