Are you passionate about literature and the arts? This is a brilliant opportunity for someone with excellent written and verbal communication skills to gain experience in the heart of the industry.

For nearly 200 years, the Royal Society of Literature has celebrated and nurtured all that is great in British literature, past and present. Today, alongside their world-class events programme, they support authors both established and emerging with awards and grants, as well as managing a schools outreach programme to inspire the next generation of readers and writers.

During the internship, the successful applicant will provide administrative support to staff in the small busy and sociable team based at Somerset House, London. This is an exciting time to work with them as they prepare to announce their new 40 Under 40 Fellows. This special initiative welcomes a new generation of writers into the RSL and celebrates the talent and diversity of Britain’s younger writers.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • General administrative experience including correspondence, office management and scheduling
  • How to support a small team with a full workload
  • Database and CRM software management
  • Customer service, through interactions with contacts over the phone, by email and face-to-face at events
  • Events management and insight into programming
  • Marketing and promotion, as well as interacting with people, on social media channels (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram)
  • Project management
  • An understanding of fundraising and charity processes
  • Time management and priority setting

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise tasks
  • Excellent IT skills (including Microsoft Office and major social media channels)
  • Absolute discretion when handling sensitive information
  • A passion for reading and the arts
  • Experience of using Photoshop and InDesign
  • Passionate about literature and the arts
