Job Details

Since 1985 Freedom from Torture has been the only UK human rights organisation dedicated to treating and supporting torture survivors who seek refuge in the UK. We do this primarily through psychological therapies but also services which document torture forensically, practical legal and welfare support and creative groups.

Thanks to the dedication of our staff and volunteers – as well as thousands of passionate supporters and funders – thousands of torture survivors have been able to rebuild their lives in incredibly difficult circumstances.

Are you an excellent communicator and media relations expert? Are you passionate about helping torture survivors to rebuild their lives?

We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic and highly organised individual. The Media Manager plays a key role within a small communications and campaigns team, responsible for increasing the profile of the work of Freedom from Torture across all media.

The post holder will lead on managing Freedom from Torture’s media relations, acting as a key point of contact for journalists and monitoring the news agenda and external policy environment. You will be skilled at turning complex policy into accessible public messages, devising effective media strategies, and developing excellent relationships across the media and with staff and stakeholders. You will have a good knowledge of what makes a story engaging and newsworthy, and understand the sensitivities of working with vulnerable people. You will be a first class communicator, able to draft and edit copy for a range of channels across traditional and digital media, and develop new and exciting ideas to maximise the impact of our campaigns and promote key projects.

With an impressive track record of media relations, you will be comfortable working with a range of media, from political news media to consumer press. If you have experience of working in the charity sector with a vulnerable service user group, and have knowledge of human rights and refugee issues, so much the better!

For an informal discussion about the post, please contact Hannah Ward, Head of Communications and Campaigns on 020 7697 3797
