Job Details

Deliver the programme that will transform technology in the developing world.

Engineering is at the heart of our nation and our future: transforming ideas and materials into global infrastructure, products and services that increase the wealth and health of our economy and society. As the UK’s national academy for engineering, we bring together the discipline’s finest minds to promote excellence and champion innovation.

The Global Challenges Research Fund is a high-profile Government investment that aims to ensure the UK takes a leading role in addressing the problems faced by developing countries. Funded by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy we deliver programmes to build engineering research capacity that will transform lives across the globe, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. You will take ownership of one of these initiatives – deploying a £3.3 million budget and focusing on planning, marketing, negotiation with potential partners, identification of relevant experts and monitoring, evaluation and learning of programme impact.

In particular, you will carefully track progress and spending against agreed milestones, liaise with donors on achievements and manage a network of awardees in the UK and across Africa. This will demand highly developed project management skills and proven ability to control significant budgets, backed by good working knowledge of international development. Equally importantly, you should be passionate about technology and its possibilities, determined to make a difference in the developing world, and very flexible concerning responsibilities and travel. In return, we can offer you the chance to work with awardees transforming their communities.

The Royal Academy of Engineering is an equal opportunity employer and values the diversity and different perspectives that people from diverse backgrounds bring to their work. It is the Academy's policy to ensure that no job applicant or employee is disadvantaged or receives less favourable treatment because of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, gender or sexual orientation.

In recognition of our continued dedication to workplace diversity and inclusion, the Academy has been named one of the Inclusive Top 50 Employers in the UK.
