Nick Smith MP is recruiting a Communications and Community Support Officer for a full-time role in his constituency office. The successful candidate will not only be handling a range of media responsibilities but also supporting Nick’s work in Blaenau Gwent. This will include identifying and getting to grips with local issues, developing contacts with key stakeholders and ensuring campaigns have maximum impact.

The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate experience of working with broadcast, print or online media; excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. Applicants should display an understanding of Blaenau Gwent and the South Wales Valleys. Applicants should also have a grasp of the main policy issues in relation to Nick’s principal areas of interest: jobs, Brexit, transport and Wales. Candidates must be in sympathy with the values of the Labour party.

Key responsibilities:

  • Pro-active and re-active communications with all media
  • Preparing media briefings
  • Analysing pattern of enquiries and producing reports
  • Dealing with standard queries from members of the public
  • Attend surgeries and other meetings as appropriate
  • Draft responses to constituents
  • Follow up on social media queries and comments
  • Retain records and information confidentially and in line with the Data Protection Act.

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
