Purpose:
To work closely with the Head of Public Affairs to both continue and identify key public policy goals important to Unum’s business interests and to set and implement a strategy to achieve those goals through effective participation in the legislative and regulatory arena in the UK.
To be a recognized in-house expert, accessible and collaborative business partner, on public policy.
Key Accountabilities:
Work closely with the Head of Public Affairs, senior management and business partners to identify specific UK legislative, regulatory and public policy issues of importance to Unum UK
Implement an overall Unum UK government and regulatory relations strategy.
Maintaining and strengthening a close working relationship with Government Ministers, Shadow Ministers, key Members of Parliament and Peers, and senior officials. As well as policy officers at the Financial Conduct Authority, Prudential Regulatory Authority and Financial Ombudsman Service, and key non-profit organisations (in conjunction with the CSR Manager) to achieve the legislative, political and public policy interests of the company.
Identify specific EU legislative, regulatory and public policy issues of importance to Unum UK and Unum Group.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
A high degree of self-motivation and leadership; sound relationships with government and political parties, strong decision-making skills.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of UK political system.
Solid knowledge and understanding of financial services issues and products, with particular focus on insurance and understanding of issues around health and work
Sound analytical skills with the ability to identify and evaluate proposed legislation/regulations, their impact on the Group, and ability to draft legislative language.
Minimum Entry Criteria:
Proven experience in Government and Political relations, ideally some disability/health industry experience is preferred.
Experience of working closely with policy makers within both UK and EU institutions.
Proficient in identifying public policy opportunities and achieving tangible success.
Proven experience of working in an in house public affairs/government relations role or within a public affairs consultancy working on financial services and or corporate business based issues.
Qualifications:
Educated to degree level
