Douglas Chapman MP wishes to recruit a part-time Communications Intern, based primarily in his busy constituency office in Dunfermline, with occasional visits to Westminster. This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and capable individual to join Douglas’s team and support his work as the Member of Parliament for Dunfermline and West Fife. The role would suit a recent graduate. Please note this is a fixed term six-month internship, but may have the possibility of becoming a full-time permanent post thereafter.
Salary – £16,000 (full time rate) p.a. paid pro-rata in line with IPSA pay scales
Hours 21-hour week - Monday – Friday (7 hours per day spread over 3 days, with flexibility to work 5 days if required)
Key Duties
• Assisting / learning how to monitor media coverage & brief MP
• Learning how to manage social media platforms, creating relevant and engaging content, including graphics & videos.
• Assisting on projects & events
• Assisting with preparing of press releases and developing the media strategy
• Developing relationships with journalists and local people.
• Assisting / learning how to manage casework
• Attending surgeries & meetings as part of training
• Basic administrative support
• Learning how to analyse, evaluate and interpret data
• Learning / assisting in appropriate research
• Learning/assisting in drafting responses to constituents
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate they have:
- Knowledge of the Dunfermline and West Fife constituency
- Understanding of UK, Scottish and Local Government politics
- Good oral & writing skills
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- A positive team oriented attitude but also an ability to work independently
- Excellent organisational & time management skills
- Computer literate – must have good working knowledge of Excel and Word
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of the main social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram
- Experience working with social media management tools, website development, video and photo editing software is highly desirable
- Able to work with diplomacy, discretion and confidentiality
- Sympathetic to the aims and values of the Scottish National Party
