Job Details

Oxford University is at an exciting point in its history. The world’s number one university has wide-ranging plans to extend and develop its outstanding innovation, research and teaching resources. Our plans build on the major contribution the University already makes to the culture, prosperity and sustainability of Oxford and the surrounding region. We create high-tech new industries, support many community initiatives and open our lectures, libraries and collections as widely as we can. These local relationships matter deeply to us, and we take very seriously our contribution and accountability to the Oxford community.

We are now looking for a committed and engaged public affairs professional for the role of Local Government and Community Relations Officer. You will be an enthusiastic advocate for Oxford University, building local understanding and support for all of our plans, activities and priorities. Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications, you will liaise with leading players across the city, county and region, including local authorities, business, the emergency services and national government agencies. You will be expected to devise and implement projects to engage economic, social and cultural partners, and to build links with the people living and working alongside the University and its colleges.

The successful applicant must be thoroughly familiar with local government, and possess wide understanding of the links between national and local policy development. You will be liaising regularly with Councillors, Members of Parliament, MEPs and senior University colleagues and will need proven expertise in community engagement and stakeholder management. You will possess excellent interpersonal, diplomatic and advocacy skills and the ability to communicate complex issues succinctly and accurately, in verbal presentations and in writing. This is a hugely varied and demanding role for someone who will relish the challenge of working for an ambitious, globally pre-eminent university while building strong connections with the broader community.
