Greenpeace investigate, expose and confront environmental abuse by governments and corporations around the world.
The Unearthed team are looking a passionate and engaged Social Media and Journalism Intern to join them for 6 months. The successful candidate will focus on growing their online audience, increasing the reach and impact of their stories and videos and delivering their own environmental news stories.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Influencer Audience Building
- Writing the daily morning news email, which goes to journalists, policymakers, academics, engaged environmentalists and Greenpeace supporters who want daily news updates e.g. students, activists
- Managing the Unearthed Twitter account, and using Twitter to tell stories in creative ways that engage the target audience
- Using online data monitoring tools to assess performance
Online journalism
- Sourcing stories from social media and email lists
- Pitching story ideas at the weekly editorial meeting
- Writing news stories for the Unearthed site, including breaking news, writing up press releases or new research, interviews, etc.
Team Working
- Contributing to team meetings with feedback on stories and new story ideas
- Shadowing more experienced journalists on specific stories
- Work openly and cooperatively with other team members, and with other interns working on similar projects in other teams
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE
- An avid news consumer across all media forms, i.e. newspapers, podcasts, radio, Twitter
- A real passion for journalism and a nose for sniffing out an important story
- An eye for good visual storytelling, and understand the role that multimedia (photo, video, data visualisation) plays in engaging audiences online
- Organised and interested in extracting useful lessons from data
- Curious, able to take initiative and research independently as well as collaborate with others
- Strategic problem solver who can see how their work fits into a bigger picture
- Obsessed with detail and accuracy, and willing to walk through fire to get the facts straight
- Collaboration team player, able to integrate into the team quickly and work with a variety of people from across the organisation
