Huw Merriman, MP for Bexhill and Battle, is looking for a full-time Parliamentary Assistant, responsible for the effective administration, communication and functioning of his Westminster office.
Responsibilities will include:
- Leading on Huw’s work as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer
- Lead parliamentary contact for Huw’s role as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Groups for the BBC and Bees
- Supporting the MP in his role as a Member of the Transport Select Committee, providing detailed briefings where required, organizing visits in relation to inquiries
- Developing campaigns, specifically focusing on Transport
- Monitoring Parliamentary business using in-house resources and providing daily briefings for the Member and circulating a weekly Westminster diary to the constituency
- Assisting with communications, including press releases, website, social media, mass mailings and bulletins
- Organising constituents' visits and tours
- Responding to routine correspondence and enquiries
- General administrative tasks
- Line management of interns and work experience students
The successful candidate must have:
- Experience of working in Parliament and a understanding of the role of a PPS
- Significant experience of secretarial and administrative responsibilities or be educated to degree level with minimum 2:1 degree and be able to demonstrate, from prior unrelated experience, an ability to learn quickly
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage a heavy workload whilst working calmly under pressure
- Have excellent standards of written English and good oral communication skills
- The ability to work well with constituency and Westminster staff, understanding the need to keep all colleagues updated across a variety of subjects
- Demonstrate a real interest in politics and be sympathetic to the aims and values of the Conservative Party
Desirable experience/skills:
- Have experience of handling confidential information with tact and sensitivity
- Ability to use social media and other online platforms
