Job Details

Required knowledge and skills
  • Excellent command of written English with ability to tailor writing to different audiences and according to different media (print, web, social)
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Office programmes and social media
  • A positive 'can-do’ attitude and a practical approach to problem solving
  • Team player - ability to work with internal and external colleagues collaboratively and in a team-oriented way
  • Ability to remain calm and composed when under pressure
  • Ability to meet all deadlines set

Desirable 

  • Ability to take photographs for use with press articles
  • An understanding of the not-for-profit sector 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Diary management and scheduling 
  • Office management 
  • Screening phone calls, enquiries and requests and handling them when appropriate 
  • Meeting and greeting visitors at all levels of seniority
  • Dealing with incoming email
  • Producing documents, briefing papers, reports and presentations
  • Organising and attending meetings and ensuring the manager is well prepared for meetings

Other tasks

  • Carrying out specific projects and research as requested by Senior Management Team 
  • Help running social media channels in line with general communications activities, including targeted and scheduled posts and responses to questions, comments etc
  • Drafting press releases to send to our press contacts, news stories for private website and updates for social media channels

The ideal candidate will have at least three years’ experience in a relevant sector and an academic/professional understanding of African and global political issues. The candidate will be able to work without supervision and under pressure to meet tight deadlines and will thrive in an ever-changing environment. The candidate will have an organised approach to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Adaptability will enable you to demonstrate your skills across a range of different channels to different audiences. The candidate will also have a high level of proficiency with all MS office products and will be able to work independently and as part of a team. Your ability to manage multiple tasks and balance the demands of differing stakeholders to deadlines and budget will be essential.
