The primary responsibilities of the post-holder will be to work in a leading role within a small team to ensure that the Deputy Leader’s media relations are delivered in a professional and timely manner. The team will be based in both Brussels and London - this role is London-based.

The post-holder will be expected to demonstrate an ability to understand and promote Liberal Democrat positions and policy. Ideally, they will have established working relationships and demonstrate an ability to build credibility with journalists and commentators in both Brussels and London. The appropriate person will be an initiative taker and is expected to work well in a fast-paced political environment.

Responsibilities include

  • Working alongside other staff and the MEP to develop and implement an effective and streamlined media strategy
  • Developing a professional working relationship with London and Brussels-based political and specialist journalists
  • Developing and maintaining an up-to-date distribution list for journalists
  • Pro-actively working with other staff to produce media initiatives for the MEP
  • Drafting and distribution of reactive lines to breaking news and the issues of the day at a European, regional and national level.
  • Regularly updating and maintaining the news content on the MEP's website
  • Filling broadcasting bids for radio, television, newspapers and online media, for both Brussels and London-based media outlets
  • Drafting press articles, press releases, and opinion pieces for the MEP
  • Working with other staff to ensure that the MEP is fully briefed before media appearances (writing policy briefs)

Person Specifications

We are looking for a motivated, creative and confident individual to fill this role. Ideally, you will have solid experience in both press work and digital communications.

Sympathy with and understanding of Liberal Democrat policy is highly desirable, as is wider knowledge relating to the Brexit debate and the campaign to stop Brexit.

We are a small, but very ambitious team. We are keen to support one another in our roles, but also rely on everyone to take initiative and responsibility with their tasks.
