Job Details

Newham is one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in England and Wales and boasts a vibrant and thriving culture and community. Our residents are aspirational but face multiple and complex challenges from unstable housing and low incomes to poor health outcomes and low skills levels.

With a new, ambitious Mayor driving a bold new agenda, we are looking for a talented individual who shares our commitment to putting people at the heart of everything we do.

This is a fantastic opportunity to apply your knowledge of policy and public affairs to make a real difference to the lives of people in one of London’s most dynamic, but also deprived neighbourhoods.

The role is part of a multidisciplinary team of policy, public affairs and social researchers who inform strategic planning and service provision and promote Newham’s vision locally, regionally and nationally.

Post holders provide the corporate policy function for the Council and in particular provide strategic advice on policy priorities to the Mayor, members and CMT. Post holders support the articulation of the borough’s vision and principles, understand the public policy context, spotting new opportunities and working to ensure that the authority’s policy framework is responsive. They ensure policies are accessible to internal and external audiences and clearly relate to our evidence base, operational policies and service delivery.

We are looking for a talented candidate to take on the role of Policy and Public Affairs Officer. It is essential you can work in a multidisciplinary team, are aware of the national and local policy landscape and the context in which local government operates.

You will have an ability to communicate complex information from a range of sources into a meaningful briefing for a range of audiences and to understand and use evidence and research within a policy context. You will be a creative thinker who wants to engage with difficult problems and challenge the way we do ‘business as usual’.

Closing Date: 28 August 2019
