Job Details

Part business, part charity, part membership body – students’ unions are all seriously fun places to work. They are organisations in their own right. Professionally run, but different. Professional teams support elected student leaders to make change, improve lives and fulfil potential; we help make it happen.

The LSESU Advice Service provides free, independent academic and housing advice to students. This ranges from responding to one-off enquiries to assisting students with longer, more ongoing cases. The successful candidate will support students through times of difficulty and help empower them to exercise their rights. We also process hardship and childcare fund applications and so part of the role involves sitting on the panel that decides when to make awards.

The role will involve providing advice to students in person, via email and over the phone, as well as delivering proactive forms of advice (e.g. via blogs and presentations). At certain points of the year the Service can get extremely busy and so an ability to work under pressure and process new information quickly is a must. The post holder will be fully supported by the Advice Manager to provide high quality advice and meet the demands of the Service.

The ideal candidate will have experience of advice provision (either academic or housing). You will understand the importance of confidentiality and possess excellent communication skills. You will be empathetic, positive in the face of adversity, solution-focused and motivated by achieving great outcomes for students, as well as able to prioritise a busy workload to ensure efficient service response times.

We welcome applicants from different professional backgrounds, including those who have not previously worked in a Students’ Union. Experience in the higher education sector is an advantage but not compulsory (and full training will be given to whoever is appointed).

Why apply?

Because you’re excited by the challenge! The exact opposite of corporate, we’re progressive, daring and creative individuals working to make a difference in unconventional workplaces.
