Job Details

The British Medical Association (BMA) is the professional association and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK. It has a prominent and influential position at the very heart of the current debate over the future of healthcare provision. The BMA speaks for doctors at all stages of their careers and is a leading voice on a wide range of professional and political issues affecting medicine and health.

With significant pressures on health services across the UK, the emergence of new health risks and cuts to public health funding improving public health has never been more important.
The BMA's science and public health team's mission is to keep the public healthy. The team works closely with the BMA's democratic structures to gather evidence, develop policy solutions, advice and guidance and lobby for and deliver policy change.

As the head of the team you will lead, manage and develop a small, high performing team to develop policy and provide advice on science and public health policy issues - as well as ensure our offering to members in your area delivers value.

This is a crucial role, which will involve close collaboration with colleagues across the Policy Directorate, particularly those with responsibility for the BMA's Board of Science, Public Health Medicine Committee, workforce and innovation and health policy.

To be successful in this role you will need significant practical experience of influencing policy in a public health or related context, as well as experience of leading and managing people. You must be articulate and confident, with excellent writing and presentation skills and the ability to form strategic relationships with counterparts in stakeholder organisations.

In return you will receive 27 days holidays (increasing to 30 days after 5 years' service) plus 1 company day and public holidays, double matching pension contributions up to 12% of salary, season ticket loan (up to £10,000) after completion of probationary period and additional flexible benefits.

This role is a maternity cover backfill contract, as the current head of the team is acting up to cover the Head of Public Health and Healthcare Delivery's maternity leave. Candidates who can start immediately preferred.

Closing Date: 16 October 2019
