In May 2018, a new Mayor of Newham was elected for the first time since 2002. The new administration has a bold vision for the borough, with a focus on putting people at the heart of everything we do. The Mayor has new priorities and ambitions, with a particular emphasis on: affordable housing delivery; youth safety; increasing openness, transparency and democratic participation; and adopting a community wealth building approach to promote local economic growth more widely and to share the benefits of that growth more widely. The Policy team are the principal advisers to the Mayor, Cabinet and Corporate Management Team in achieving those ambitions.

The post holder leads the coordination of policy for the Mayor’s Office and CMT, supporting the Head of Policy and Public Affairs and working closely with the Head of the Mayor’s Office.

This post holder is responsible for supporting the developing Mayoral priority policies and will act as the chief speech writer, coordinating speechwriting input for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and CMT. The post includes some supervision responsibilities for policy officers on a day to day basis.

The post holder supports the articulation of the borough’s vision and principles, understanding the public policy context, spotting new opportunities and working to ensure that the authority’s policy framework is responsive. The post holder must ensure that policies are articulated in a manner which is accessible to internal and external audiences and which clearly relates to our evidence base, operational policies and service delivery.

You will have strong experience of policy development within a public sector setting together with a background in working with elected members to shape direction. You will be experienced in managing high performing teams. Experience of developing and delivering work programmes and project plans is essential. You will need to demonstrable ability to advocate confidently on complex and sensitive issues with senior stakeholders.
