This is an exciting, fast paced role within the Bank’s Policy team. The team ensures that the Bank operates effectively as a delivery arm of Government, which in turn will mean that it is well placed to play a leading role in the formation of policies that directly impact the provision of finance to SMEs.

The Policy team works across all areas of the Bank on a variety of issues. The team’s core role is to ensure that the Bank operates effectively as a part of Government, whilst maintaining its operational independence. This includes advising Government and Ministers on access to finance issues and ensuring that the Bank is well placed to engage with the Government’s wider policy objectives; whilst also maintaining stakeholder relationships across Whitehall and participating in national and international fora on SME access to finance issues.

For the right candidate this is an influential and rewarding position. The team plays a key role in developing the future direction of the Bank, and of Government’s SME access to finance policies, particularly in light of the EU referendum result.

The role could be based in London or Sheffield but the successful candidate will need to visit the other office periodically, and in particular, our meetings with Whitehall colleagues generally take place in London.

The British Business Bank is a unique and exciting new institution. It was established in 2014 with the overarching goal of changing the structure of the business finance markets for smaller businesses, so these markets work more effectively and dynamically.

The British Business Bank is the Government’s centre of expertise, policy development and delivery with respect to SME finance markets. We do not finance businesses directly; instead, we provide funds and guarantees to private sector partners, allowing them to provide more finance to smaller businesses in turn.

The British Business Bank is 100% owned by the Government but is managed independently under the governance of a Board of Directors. We operate as a wholesale institution in a wide range of financial service markets, ranging from bank lending to venture capital.
