The IES is a charitable organisation which promotes and raises public awareness of environmental science. We activate our global network of leading education institutions, researchers,  professionals, and policymakers to stand up for science, scientist and for the natural world.

As a small but rapidly growing charity, we are recruiting for four positions to increase our headcount to ten.

Main Purpose of the Post
The Policy Officer is responsible for delivering and further developing policy for the IES and its sister organisations and managing the IES network of Communities.

You will be outgoing, personable and a proactive individual with a strong interest in environmental policy and an understanding of the role of science in policy. You will have the ability to pick up complex information and quickly synthesis key points. Relishing the chance to engage with a wide range of environmental experts, you will need to be highly flexible, motivated and able to fit into the collaborative culture of the office.

Job Role

  • Monitor consultation topics and deadlines from relevant departments and organisations to ensure that the IES is responding to critical topics.
  • Develop processes to engage IES committees, Communities, Members and outside experts and organisations to producing high calibre policy and to increase the impact of policy work.
  • Seek to raise our pfoile within Central Government, Parliament the Devolved Administrations and Local Government.
  • Develop a network of appropriate contacts within Parliament, government departments, arms-length bodies and local authorities and ensure that these are available to the whole organisation.
  • Devise methods to measure the impact of your work
  • Ensure that policy statements are consistent and in line with the vision and strategy of the organisation.
  • Identify strategic opportunities to broaden our policy work, methods of engagement with policy decision-makers and to challenge thinking within the organisation.
  • Work with other staff to ensure that they are aware of and engaged with upcoming policy and that appropriate links are maintained and built between your work and the marketing, publications and events functions.
  • Develop and manage risk management tools around the policy process.
