Job Details

Autistic people face some of the starkest health inequalities in society. This role is an opportunity to work with two multi-award winning charities on a major health policy initiative to save or transform thousands of lives.

What is the role?
The Sowerby Health intervention for Autistic People (SHAPe) is a project to design and test an annual health check for autistic people. Before these health checks can be rolled out nationwide, they must be commissioned by the NHS and accompanied with reforms to GP recording practices. In 2019, the NHS Long Term Plan committed to piloting them.

Autistica and the National Autistic Society are seeking a determined policy professional to help ensure the NHS is ready to implement the health-checks. You should have experience with either policy development, NHS service design/management, implementation science, qualitative research or a similar field. We particularly welcome applications from autistic candidates.

We want to build a society that works for autistic people. With your help we can help we can ensure more autistic people in the UK enjoy long, healthy and happy lives.

How will the role work?
This is a fixed-term role for 14 months with the possibility of continuing beyond that. Depending on the candidate it is available:

  • Full-time (35 hours a week) for £28,000 a year
  • Part-time 0.8FTE (4 days a week) for £22,400 a year
  • Part-time 0.6FTE (3 days a week) for £16,800 a year

You will be employed by Autistica but will work with both organisations. The exact time you spend at each charity will vary throughout the project.

If you are employed to work three days a week the SHAPe project will be your sole focus. If you are employed full-time or for four days a week your remaining time will be spent working on health policy development at Autistica.
