The Speaker’s Parliamentary Placement Scheme is the House of Commons’ highest profile social mobility scheme, offering a 9-month paid internship working in the office of a Member of Parliament as a Parliamentary Assistant. The Scheme aimed is at talented individuals who are underrepresented in the Parliament, who have the skills, passion and potential to work in Parliament but who do not have access to the traditional routes in.
Successful candidates work in their Member’s Westminster office from Monday to Friday and spend at least one Friday in the month in the MP’s constituency office. Throughout their 9 months participants attend masterclasses, visits external workplaces and are given a career mentor to support them with finding employment upon completing the scheme. Masterclasses cover topics relevant to working in an MPs office; written communications, presentation skills, social media and media handling, and personal branding. Workplace visits, which are designed to broaden horizons and build professional networks have included Welsh Parliament, Tideway London, AXA, Portland Communications, and Mercedes Benz.
The Scheme opens in October 2020 and runs for 9 months. There are now 13 placements available with Members of Parliament from political parties across the spectrum.
