About the role
Working under the directive of the Head of the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor’s Strategic Adviser, the Political Assistant supports the Mayor in delivering her political priorities. As listed in the Mayor’s manifesto some of the key deliverables include, a new social housing programme; a commitment to youth and youth safety; development of initiatives to involve residents in local decisions; and the community wealth building project, putting people at the heart of everything we do.
This is a fast paced, exciting, and varied role which can be extremely rewarding, providing great job satisfaction. Acting as the main point of contact between the Mayor and the Cabinet, Labour Group and Council Officers, the Political Assistant facilitates the conduct of business of the Administration, drafting speeches, briefings and other communications, whilst liaising with political figures such as local MPs, the London Mayor and Assembly Members.
About You
Working in an environment where no two days are the same, we are looking for someone who is ambitious, tenacious and committed to making a positive difference to Newham’s residents. With a comprehensive understanding of the current issues facing local authorities, you will have a background in politics, with up to date knowledge of local, regional and national policy debates.
Collaborating with many key political groups and elected representatives, it is important that you are able to communicate effectively amongst a wide range of audiences, building relationships to provide expert advice at a senior level.
You will be required to provide examples of your experience of the following areas within your application:
Political parties and their operations, with Membership of the Labour Party
Local government policies, strategy, legislative and financial framework
Working at a similar level on comparable work within a local authority, campaigning or other public sector organisation.
