The News Media Association is the representative body for news media publishers covering national, regional and local newspapers and their news websites. Its primary focus is representing the editorial and commercial interests of its members to governments, regulatory authorities and to national and international organisations. It is based in London with a small team of eight covering legal, public policy and government affairs and specialist media services. It has a vacancy for a Senior Legal Adviser to start work in December due to the retirement of Santha Rasaiah, the NMA’s current Director of Legal, Policy and Regulatory Affairs at the end of the year.

Senior Legal Adviser

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and with responsibility for the NMA’s Legal Policy and Regulatory Affairs Committee, comprising publisher and editorial representatives and legal and policy adviser experts from NMA member news media companies. Expertise as a highly skilled lawyer required with experience of Parliamentary drafting, procedure and briefings and of writing policy papers and advocating their adoption. Interest in the editorial and commercial aspects of media law as they impact on news publishers. Ability to represent the NMA in meetings with law officers and the judiciary and to provide advocacy leadership together with the NMA CEO and NMA Board members in meetings on Government and Parliamentary business, including Select Committee inquiries and meetings with Regulators. Responsibilities will include being the NMA representative on a number of industry organisations. Interest in international legal developments and their impact on media freedoms. Limited requirement to give individual legal advice to industry organisations and NMA members.
