Job Details

At the DfT, we aim to create a modern, technologically advanced transport system across the UK. Our work is dynamic and challenging, affecting most of the country’s population every single day.

Our Policy professionals work at the heart of the Department to design, develop and propose appropriate courses of action to help meet our key priorities and ministerial objectives. The policies you lead upon will have a direct impact on the communities you live within and help achieve our ambitions of connecting people and places. The work you undertake will be led by ministerial priorities, meaning we are fast paced and reactive to wide range of subjects in the work we undertake.

You might have an idea of what a policy job looks like. You might be tempted to rule yourself in or out based on that. But think again - there is no stereotypical policy professional. They come from all walks of life, all types of backgrounds and range in age. It's important that our policymakers represent the society they create policy for.

Responsibilities:
• Act as policy lead on policy project boards. This includes writing papers, presenting issues, and delivering on government objectives.
• Write policy submissions and own the briefing and narrative for your policy areas.
• Manage small policy teams and stakeholders in the course of delivering policy.
• Coordinate across a number of different policies.
• Act as first point of contact for DfT Ministers on enquiries relating to your policy area.
• Provide support to DfT Ministers for ad hoc briefings, debates and other parliamentary business.

Required skills and experience:

• Great communication skills with the ability to build and maintain networks.
• Highly motivated candidates who can work independently to drive projects forwards.
• Strong leaders who can coach and support teams towards development and growth.
• Confident stakeholder management skills to develop close working relationships with a range of people across the department.
• Experience in policy management from the development stages through to implementation.
• Ability to draft documents that are logically structured, presenting a full, balanced picture with a persuasive conclusion.
• Clear written communication that shows critical thinking and understanding.
