Job Details
Alex Cunningham MP is seeking a full-time Researcher/Senior Parliamentary Researcher to join his team. Alex is Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister for Courts, and also campaigns on numerous other issues including poverty, health inequalities and energy.
The successful applicant will be appointed on either the Researcher or Senior Researcher pay scale depending on experience.
Attributes
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of writing in policy, press and political contexts:
Highly strategic and organised, with experience planning and executing campaigns.
Ability to conduct high-quality desk research and analysis at pace – quantitative and qualitative.
Able to handle multiple competing demands and very short deadlines.
An understanding of legislation and the legislative process;
Competent at giving verbal as well as written briefings for media and detailed policy topics;
Able to write effective political copy for social media, website and other digital channels
Experience working in Parliament or in roles which engaged with parliamentarians.
Educated to degree level.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, Excel and various social media platforms, including video editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere)
A team player who can lead but also able to work in isolation
An interest in Labour Party campaigning.
Responsibilities
To act as the principal adviser to Alex on all policy and communications issues, and manage all parliamentary work streams, including:
Supporting Alex’s frontbench role: drafting speeches, quotes and articles; developing policy; and handling all media requests
Ensuring a strong digital presence, managing social media channels and working with the team to develop compelling content – particularly video
Working with Alex and Labour press/briefings team to develop strong messaging and media lines ahead of broadcast appearances. Support interview preparation;
Devising and conducting research for the frontbench role and other campaigns, with assistance from other team members;
Turning all research and policy work into a compelling package for media, including strong press release, case studies and social media content where appropriate:
Running the parliamentary side of Alex’s campaigns
Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
