The purpose of this role is to support the Bishop of St Albans in his duties as a Member of the House of Lords and as a diocesan bishop.

The Bishop is an active Member of the Lords, who has served on committees, introduced Private Member’s Bills and campaigned on a range of areas including gambling reform, Sunday trading, serious youth violence, human rights, and marriage registration. He also leads for the Lords Spiritual on rural affairs and agriculture.

In order to maximise effectiveness, the Parliamentary and Policy Researcher will work as part of the Church of England Parliamentary Unit.

The Parliamentary Unit serves the National Church Institutions (NCIs) by maintaining links with MPs, Peers and others in Westminster and Whitehall, helping the NCIs to engage more effectively with the parliamentary process. The Unit is based at Church House, Westminster (the national offices of the Church of England). in the Mission and Public Affairs Division of the Archbishops’ Council, which is concerned with the Church’s engagement with society and with issues of public concern.

As Parliamentary and Policy Researcher to the Bishop of St Albans, you will work 35 hours per week starting in September 2020.

Your work will be overseen by the Bishop of St Albans and by the Head of Parliamentary Affairs.

Your role will include research and information gathering, drafting speeches, questions, and material for publication, managing meetings, appointments and other events on behalf of the Bishop. Your priorities and tasks will be set by the Bishop, and the Head of Parliamentary Affairs will guide and oversee your parliamentary work on the Bishop's behalf.

The balance between parliamentary tasks and those that relate to the Bishop’s diocesan role is likely to vary depending on the parliamentary cycle.

Your usual place of work with be Church House, Westminster, London although currently employees are working remotely due to Covid-19 restrictions.

This post is offered on a fixed term contract which is expected to last for 12 months.
