Job Details

The Role
Newham is perhaps the youngest, most diverse, and vibrant local authority in the UK. We are transforming how the Council works to put people at the heart of everything we do and to create better homes and neighbourhoods for our residents.

Elected in 2018, Rokhsana Fiaz is our ambitious directly elected Mayor who is driving a bold new agenda for the Borough. We are looking for a talented individual to help her, her cabinet and the council deliver her priorities including: a massive new social housing programme; a commitment to youth and youth safety; openness and new ways of involving residents in local government; community wealth building and the commitment to ‘put people at the heart of everything we do’.

Home to several of London’s largest and most ambitious regeneration projects, creating better neighbourhoods for our residents, including 38,000 new homes and 100,000 jobs in areas such as the historic Royal Docks, Canning Town, Custom House, Stratford and Upton Park, we have the second highest target for new homes of any London borough.

The Candidate
Newham is one of the most complex and high-profile boroughs in London. Working alongside our dynamic Mayor means the role requires flexibility, energy, political awareness, and a close understanding of the Mayor’s role and relationships in Newham, London and Nationally.
This role provides an exciting opportunity to support the Mayor in ensuring her ambitious plans are delivered. Acting as one of her key advisers, you will be able to horizon scan and anticipate challenges, keeping both the ‘big picture’ strategic objectives and detailed operational priorities on track.

Demonstrating considerable personal charm and resilience, you will be able rapidly to build rapport not only with the Mayor, but also with major strategic stakeholders, senior officers and leading members. You will have a deep understanding of local and national government and politics; you will also will bring experience of managing a busy team and of ensuring professional and seamless processes are adopted to manage the business of governance effectively.
