This a junior role and will be based in the constituency office in Newport West when Covid-19 restrictions allow but it will involve working from home until the current situation with the pandemic changes. Traveling to Westminster as and when required. Full Time 37.5hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities will include:

Working under the instruction of the Senior Caseworker

  • Dealing with all types of correspondence, passing queries to other team members and the MP as appropriate
  • Dealing with a variety of both national policy enquiries and individual casework issues
  • Logging and monitoring the progress of constituent cases
  • Drafting responses to constituent queries
  • General office administration and support
  • Handling telephone and walk-in enquiries
  • Handling administrative arrangements for meetings with members of the public/MP surgeries
  • Retaining records and information confidentially in accordance with data protection laws
  • Covering for Senior caseworker in their absence

Skills and experience required:

  • Good local knowledge of the constituency
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • A sympathetic manner in dealing with people on the phone or face-to-face
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations/people
  • Problem solver with good administrative skills
  • Confident and competent use of IT including Microsoft Office, email and the Internet
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work to strict deadlines
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a small team
  • Experience of working with social media platforms
  • An interest in current affairs and politics and supportive of the values of the Labour Party

Upon appointment you will be required to apply for security clearance, undertaken by the Security Vetting and Pass Office. See Members’ Staff Security Clearance page for further info. MPs generally pay staff in accordance with IPSA guidelines.
