Job Details

The British Ports Association (BPA) and International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) is looking for a Sustainability Advisor to join their dynamic and action-orientated teams in 2021. This is a unique opportunity and brand new role created due to the ever-increasing focus on the environmental impacts of shipping and how the ports sector can be more sustainable.

Responsibilities will include taking on some policy work in the ever-expanding area of climate change, the environment and sustainable development, as well coordinating programmes for UK ports, supporting UK ports in sharing good practice, funding and opportunities to collaborate or build coalitions.

For IAPH, the focus will be on the regulatory and capacity-building agenda of the London-based International Maritime Organization (IMO), covering work areas relevant to ports, including maritime emissions, trade facilitation, digital transformation, automation, safety and security.

You will join us in representing the interests of our members in a sector which plays a fundamental role in transport and the economy. Ports handle 95% of the UK’s international trade and the profile of the sector has never been higher. Seaborne trade accounts for 9 billion tonnes of cargo, handling approximately 80% of all traded goods. There are up to 55,000 different ships calling at the world’s 9,000 ports and harbours every day

You will be joining two small, friendly and dynamic teams and will be primary based from the BPA’s office in London Bridge, with the option to work from home where suitable. Some UK and international travel may be required, as well as attendance at some networking events and conferences which may be outside of usual office hours.
